
The E46 M3 has diverged with neglected and abused examples priced in the low teens and low-mileage pristine examples holding in the mid-$20Ks or higher. From there we gave it a VANOS resealing and fresh valve adjustment. The result is an M3 the looks and drives exactly like it originally came spec’d as a 6-speed manual. In the process we removed the SMG steering wheel paddles, installed a fresh clutch kit, clutch master and slave cylinder, shifter assembly, ZHP shift knob, pedal assembly, resealed the gearbox, and had the bell housing machined by Performance Technic.

It started life as an SMG II automated manual, but we swapped it to a three-pedal manual due to a bad SMG pump. The Carfax is clean and shows a history of regular oil changes and frequent services. I also have a complete carbon fiber interior trim kit I will sell for extra if you want to go that route. It is optioned with desirable features like the Cold Weather and Premium Packages, Xenon headlights, post-facelift LED taillights, and a touch screen Kenwood stereo with Garmin Nav and a backup camera. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires and H&R Sport Springs put that power to the road with excellent grip and handling. It pulls super strong and runs flawlessly.


It looks F’ing proper with Hyper Black Apex Arc-8 wheels and the carbon fiber CSL-style rear lip. We are finally done sorting it and it’s time to find a new owner. It is always our first choice for DMV runs, parts pickups, and any other excuse we can find to drive it. This 2003 black over black M3 has been our favorite car of the summer at Glen Shelly.

A mid-lifecycle update starting with March of 2003 (2003.5) model years included several new features, the most notable being LED taillights. The SI B covering this was extended into June of 2003 build dates, but only as a precautionary measure. The 2001, 2002, and early 2003 model years had a rod bearing recall that was remedied by mid-2003. Even today, a well-driven E46 M3 can hold its own against much more powerful and modern performance cars. The M3 also got exclusive suspension, brakes, and wheels that gave it formidable performance. A pull to its screaming 8000-RPM redline is a smile-evoking experience that is only made better by the communicative and composed E46 chassis. The S54 won multiple engineering awards upon its release and, at the time, it produced the highest horsepower per liter for a normally aspirated production engine. At the heart of the E46 M3 was the 333-horsepower S54B32 engine, an evolution of an architecture that reaches back to the original M535i and M1.
